“Cross Walk: Lent to Easter” an art exhibit at Second Reformed Church in Zeeland will feature art and artifacts with a cross motif. A number of artists have conveyed the meaning of the cross in their lives through their work. The free exhibit is being offered to enrich the community's experience of the Lenten season. The art will be exhibited in the Gathering Area next to the sanctuary.
The exhibit opens with a reception on Sunday, March 6 at 11:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall located in the lower level of the church. Elizabeth “Betsy” Steele Halstead of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship will speak on the use of visual arts in the church sharing her interest in integrating worship and the arts. She will also be exhibiting her series of woodcut prints with a cross theme. The reception will offer an opportunity to meet other exhibiting artists. A gallery walk and refreshments will follow. All are cordially invited.
Madison, Wisconsin artist, teacher and author Harriet Vander Meer will display many crosses done in paper collage. Zeeland artists include Patti Bing (photography), Elly Butler (counted cross stitch) and Judi Smit (watercolor). Cross art by children of Second Reformed Church will also be exhibited. Holland artist is Lisa Doezma (acrylic). Jan Vander Kooi Mulder (oil) and Jane Ewing (calligraphy) are from Grand Haven. Artifacts for this show include several crosses made of wood, stone, fabric, and metal. Some of these pieces are on loan from families, Second Reformed CRC in Grand Haven, and Zeeland Historical Museum.
Second Reformed Church is located at 225 E. Central Ave. in Zeeland. The exhibit will remain through May 29 and may be viewed Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. For special arrangements call 616-772-2153.
